is short-sighted and a threat to public safety. >> reporter: this violent crime enforcement team died this weekend. it was 17 years old. cause of death? budget cuts. >> we have to organize the police department to work with the fact that we're losing 90 officers. >> reporter: or was it dumb? >> the unit for the san jose police department will have a terrible impact on public safety. >> the san jose police will still fight the gang activity, but the force is now disbanded. they took out an ad today in the mercury news to bring the unit back. >> the majority of homicides in san jose are gang-related. we simply don't have the resources to address gangs today like we did yesterday. >> the police unit counts a thousand gang-related arrests in a city that says they have 50 active gangs and many

members. >> when you're doing your budget, okay? you have to choose what is more important to you. community-based organizations or public safety. >> there are people who believe we should close the libraries in order to avoid cuts in the police and fire departments. i don't share it. >> the mayor says it is a tough balance, the out going chief of police backs the moves. >> we took what is dedicated to gang unit, to stopping the gangs and moving them over to another unit where they will continue to do that along with other things. >> san jose will be a safe city in america he says. the council member is still very worried. >> a lot of crimes wouldn't be solved. and that is a sad day in the city of san jose. >> of course everybody has their own ideas where to cut when there is not enough money to go around. the cops mentioned a $6 million program for the san pedro

square downtown they thought was a waste of money. the mayor says if pensions were not so high, there would be more money. >> just a lot of pointing fingers, thank you very much. and police in the south bay were on the front lines, campaigning for a democrat. they talked about the budget crisis and the impact on public safety. and a city leader in the east side found herself the victim of a crime. ms. quan had her purse taken close to where she was shopping. she was able to get a photo. she is running for mayor and doesn't think she was targeted. another woman in the parking lot said the man approached her as well. a drive-by shooting outside an oakland restaurant last night left four people wounded. police say somebody opened fire on a crowd outside the restaurant on jack london

square. two men and women were hurt but none of the injuries are serious. no arrests are made yet. and we could find out where potentionally dangerous pg&e lines are located in the bay area. the chief of staff says they will release the information tomorrow afternoon. the california public utilities commission requested the information following the pipeline disaster in san bruno. the section of pipe that exploded is now being investigated to try to learn the cause of the san bruno explosion. and pacifica had a benefit dinner there at the school. besides selling tickets they organized trips and gifts for silent auctions. >> well, we could have a fundraiser, maybe turn it into a few thousand. i think she did a good job with
